Provenance: H. S. AYOVBVS gilted on on lower corber of endpaper inside back cover. in-8 (20.5 x 13 cm), 38 pp. Very rare original edition of one of the first French anesthesia works (cf. M. Zimmer, History of anesthesia, p 91,. R. Nephew, The introduction of surgical anesthesia in France, J Hist Med Allied Sci, 1946, 1, 607-610). Antoine François Adolphe Delabarre was born in Paris, where he became a medical officer and medical doctor. He followed the same career as his father, becoming a dental surgeon at the Hospital for orphans and foundlings. Since the announcement of the discovery of anesthesia, he had himself used ether and published the results of his first anesthesia Jan. 30, 1847 (in Gaz. Hosp. Paris), a week after his colleague and neighbor American-born Christopher S. Brewster. He had already published a few months before this book, a brochure entitled; Guide du praticien dans l'administration des vapeurs d'éther. Other than a few paragraphs in the first book which are found here almost identical, this manual is essentially a different book, with many new chapters. This is the only two to contain a figure showing the latest model of the device Charriere. It aims essentially practical. Delabarre reports the results of his experiments and draws several precepts on the method of anesthesia and the dose to use. To prevent accidents, it recommends several measures: patient fasting, proper patient position (to prevent choking accidents). Paragraphs are devoted to the insensitivity of anesthetized patients, nervous movements and their prevention, etherization applications for dentistry.
